I have never been treated so rudely by the staff and principle as I was at Mays. Besides some other issues of the students and the safety of the students. Dispite what most people think about Mays, they have very concerned teachers. They will do anything to get you to school to get an education. One of my teachers in the ninth grade came, and got me from my bus stop because I missed the bus. He went out of his way to come and get me. During my 9th grade year, with the closing of Harper Archer, Mays had started to decline. The faculty is constantly changing, because of either retirement or quitting, and I have never really had a chance to bond with many of my teachers. The principal leadership is low. Sports are good, we have had many successes, despite some circumstances that have happened in the past year. Thanks to the education I have received from most of my teachers, I successfully passed the GHSGT and the EOCT. All in all, Mays is an ok school but im glad this is my last year. From the teachers to the adminstrative staff. The academic stuides are declining and the teachers are scared to speak the truth that Mays needs to be shut down and nver open again. I recently returned for a visit while in Atlanta and was saddened. Mays is slipping. Once rated as one of the top 3 high schools in the nation, and also the most represented High School at West Point, my son is USMA class of 04. Mays still has excellent academic programs as well as excellent students. I believe Mays may be declining due to actions from the Board of Education. Redistricting has taken many high achieving students and replaced them with low achieving students. Teachers are still trying to uphold the traditions but are lacking the level of parental involvement that was once so great. From its students to its administrative staff to its faculty. I will admit that I like being at Mays, but there have been many changes since my sister graduated in 2000. It is too often that students come back to Mays and say that they are now ashamed of a school of which they once said they were proud to be apart of. You see for yourself. I think that Mays could do much, much better. Although the administrative staff is not as good as they could be, the school continues to maintain a high level of academic excellence. I have had the pleasure of being taught by some of the best teachers in the state and they are the only reason that I continue to attend this school. Then I transferred to a school in Cobb. I was amazed at how different the school is in Cobb. It was more diverse and had a very professional staff. The teachers were different too and I was very happy about the change. And I never regreted leaving Mays. I think the problem is some of the teachers. My daughter tells me all the time how boring her algebra teacher is.
