Turner Middle School Reviews

I was a teacher at Turner, and I can tell you that the staff works very hard. Oftentimes, I found that students, bent on being disruptive and popular, cared very little about academic pursuits. I also realized that often students are products of their communities and the community around Turner is and has been on a decline for some time. There is very little parental support or parental presence unless it's a social or sports activity. The administration did the best it could with what we had. District level policies concerning disruptive students were a joke. There were way too many hoops to go through to get kids who didn't come to learn out of the school environment. On the positive side. Many students did come to learn and to do well. We have a student going to Marist next year for high school and several to magnet programs.

I am a teacher at TMS and I agree that not as much learning is taking place, as we all wish. I partially attribute this to a huge lack of parental involvement in the academic lives of our students. If more parents made their concerns known then I m sure administration would be willing to work with the community. I also attribute the difficult learning environments to bureaucratic red tape in Atlanta Public Schools policies. Disruptive children are often given a seemingly unlimited number of chances to correct their behavior at the cost of lost instruction time to great students who come to school daily, ready and willing to work toward their futures. Consequences for actions that would seem unthinkable in other school systems are nearly nonexistent in APS. Parents, I encourage all of you to get involved. The school cannot exist apart from the community. The teachers cannot do it alone.

The majority of the students are totally disruptive in the classrooms, and very little learning takes place. Some of these children are experiencing problems at home, which makes it difficult for them to concentrate. I commend the few dedicated teachers. Replace the principal & vice principal with real educators who care about our children.

I would encourage any parent to find another school rather than send their child here. The administration staff could care less if our children of tomorrow learn or not. They are unorganized and constantly change their stories to fit whatever new situation is occuring to protect themselves rather than the kids. This is the worst experience my child has ever encountered since beginning school (this was 6th grade). The principle had no idea of what kind or honor reading program the school had to offer during orientation - that should have been my first clue of what the 05-06 school year was going to be like. My child no longer enjoys school - Thanks to Turner Middle.

Iattended turner and the school is not as bad as made out to be. but it does need some work.

This school is very run down, this school is not up to academic standards. If i could i would try to find another school, but transfers are not being acccepted now. Again too many students per classroom. When my child attended 6th grade at turner there was so many children in one classroom, it took almost 3 weeks to get students off of the floor. Complained to school, and all was said give us time. I believe the office is totally unorganized. I do believe most teachers are okay, and some really care. Time will tell with the new principle. I have also noticed more portable class rooms, and 2 of them by the gym, not a safe area. I hope things can turn around for this school. I attended this school, and there is no comparison .

there is aprox. 25-30 children per class. I am not impresed with this school. Turner has a way of covering things up. I wish we had another choice of schools. I do not feel that my child is always safe at this school. the teachers are for the most part very good, if not for the teachers I would be crazy by now.
